The densely forested Hida region in Gifu Prefecture, Japan is home to woodworking traditions that go back 1,300 years. The Japan House Guelph, HIDA | A nascent woodworking tradition invites visitors to discover the legendary artisans of Hida and their contemporary design legacy, embodied in the work of centuries-old furniture maker Hida Sangyo Co., Ltd. is embodied.
Selected exhibits include a chair designed by the late Sori Yanagi using wood bending techniques native to Hida and now part of the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. and a two-spoon made by Ibuki Kaiyama using a traditional chiselling technique.
For an audience that is enthusiastic about craft heritage, sustainable management or a closer connection with our natural world, HIDA | A woodworking tradition cannot be overlooked! Exhibition-related events and workshops are also planned to make your visit to Japan House even more memorable.
