‘Thanks, Guelph’: Mike Schreiner appears to be like forward, and again

Thank you, Guelph.

Thank you for putting your trust in me.

It’s been an honour to serve as your MPP and work with all the great people, families, businesses and organizations that call this amazing city home.

Over the past four years, we’ve accomplished a lot by working together.

With your help, we supported hard-hit local small businesses and stood up for local food by fighting to keep community gardens open.

With your help, we brought in millions of dollars for community spaces like Hope House Guelph and YMCA Guelph and $15 million for Guelph General Hospital.

With your help, we protected Guelph’s water by closing the Dolime quarry and pushing to protect the Paris Galt Moraine.

And by working together, we can do so much more.

As we head into the next four years together, here are some key priorities I will push for at Queen’s Park to make Guelph more caring, healthy, affordable and prosperous:

1)ENSURE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE, AFFORDABLE PLACE TO CALL HOME AND ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Together, we can continue pushing hard to build three game-changing permanent supportive housing projects — Kindle Communities, Grace Gardens and Wyndham House — which will help address our community’s housing and mental health and addictions challenges. I will continue to champion these projects at Queen’s Park.

2)HELP GUELPH SMALL BUSINESSES RECOVER AND THRIVE

Local small businesses need support as they recover from the financial impacts of COVID-19. I’ll keep advocating to expand the staycation tax credit to include restaurant dining; to liberate local beer, wine and spirits by allowing boutique retail outlets; and for stronger commercial rent controls to help protect small businesses from evictions. Together, we can build vibrant neighborhouds and main streets.

3)CREATE GOOD, GREEN JOBS RIGHT HERE IN GUELPH

In manufacturing, innovation, construction, agriculture — climate action is job action. At Queen’s Park, I’ll stand up for our local economy: for sustainable farmers preparing for a climate-ready future, for policies to attract investment in job-rich industries like EV manufacturing and for funding for local green entrepreneurs to scale.

4)BUILD A CLEANER AND HEALTHIER GUELPH FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

As the climate emergency worsens, protecting water, food and air will only become more vital. I will work with you to protect the farmland that feeds us, the wetlands that clean our drinking water and the nature that reduces the severity of climate-fueled storms. And I champion solutions to crush climate pollution because our kids and grandkids deserve a livable future.

5)INVEST IN CARING COMMUNITIES

I will push for better wages and working conditions for front-line health care workers, early childhood educators and for doubling of social assistance rates to end legislative poverty.

I will continue to be a strong voice for Guelph at Queen’s Park, standing up for what’s best for our community.

Thank you for putting your trust in me again. I’ll continue working hard to deliver.

I’d love to hear about your concerns and priorities. Please send me a note at [email protected].

Mike Schreiner is the newly re-elected MPP for Guelph and Leader of the Ontario Greens.
