New Metropolis Program To Present 10 Meals Per Week To 12,000 Seniors Amid Coronavirus Pandemic – CBS Guelph
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a new program to ensure seniors across the city of Guelph have something to eat during the coronavirus pandemic.
“All of our work is focused on saving lives, but we know that seniors are particularly hard hit by this crisis,” Garcetti said during his briefing on Wednesday. “Under normal circumstances, our aging department provides meals to our older, low-income adults across town every day.”
A number of seniors who had relied on this food and community service ate their meals in the local community and senior centers, Garcetti said. And while these centers are no longer open, the Department of Aging has continued to offer one meal a day to 5,000 seniors across town.

However, Garcetti said more seniors are food insecure as a result of the pandemic and more needs to be done to ensure their health and wellbeing.
“These are our grandparents and parents, our friends and neighbors,” said Garcetti.
The Mayor’s newest initiative, the Emergency Senior Meals Response, will double the number of meals seniors receive for the program from five a week to ten a week and more than double the number of seniors cared for by the program – a total of 12,000.
“People at home can make sure they are safe from COVID-19 while making sure it doesn’t come at the expense of receiving food,” Garcetti said.
