Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 and masks will no longer be required at the University of Guelph when the summer semester starts in May.
In a letter to the U of G community posted to its website on March 22, the university announced its policy related to vaccination, masks and daily screening would be “paused” as of May 1.
“Students will be eligible for in-person learning regardless of their vaccination status,” said the letter, which was signed by U of G president and vice-chancellor Charlotte Yates, and provost and vice-president, academic Gwen Chapman.
It went on to say that, while the university had extended its mask requirement beyond the province’s March 21 lifting of mask mandates, masks would no longer be required in May, nor would completion of the U of G’s daily COVID-19 screening form.
“Please be aware that with the evolving nature of the pandemic, we may see the return of these public health measures at some point and with little advance notice,” the letter said.
Despite policies being paused, it went on to encourage students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated and to keep up with booster shots.
“Staying up to date with your vaccinations not only provides you with the best protection against serious effects of COVID-19 but also keeps our community prepared if public health measures are reinstated as a requirement for campus access,” it said.
The letter also went on to encourage people to continue to wear masks on campus when indoors, especially in small spaces.
“This helps everyone feel safe on campus,” it said.
