Beginning a new life in a new country comes with many challenges and establishing a career is no exception. Barriers to employment can include a lack of knowledge about local labour markets, professional networks and connections, or knowledge about what Employers are seeking in self-marketing tools like resumes and cover letters, and what can be expected from a typical interview process.

When Alex Zantout first came to Guelph, he turned to Lutherwood’s employment services to overcome some of these barriers. Today he draws on his personal experience to help others as Supervisor of the Newcomer Services Team at Lutherwood’s Guelph office

“I was new to Guelph, I had neither knowledge of the labour market nor connections to help me out find the right job. The newcomer career support team, with their experience, armed me with all the knowledge I need and provided me the right networking opportunities and exposure. That helped me settle in my new community in a heartbeat.”

His team at Lutherwood’s Employment Services office in Guelph offers opportunities for Newcomers to create personalized plans for job searching, self-marketing including building resumes and an online presence, interview preparation, networking with industry professionals, paid placements with employers, as well as ongoing coaching, mentorship opportunities and additional tools and resources.

During the month of October, the Newcomer Career Services team at Lutherwood will be hosting a series of free hour-long webinars on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. Each webinar will provide insight from industry professionals from a variety of fields.
