LA structure studios captured in photographs by Marc Goodwin

Photographer Marc Goodwin has taken his tour of architecture studios around the world to the US, starting with 15 workspaces in Guelph that are full of models and photos.

Goodwin, who runs the Archmospheres photography studio, captured the LA architecture studio photo set as part of his series, which previously included the Netherlands, Paris, London and Barcelona.

The offices in the Californian city, however, particularly stood out from the other locations because of the works on display for the photographer.

His pictures show stacks of models, a pink staircase and colorful drawings in the room that Bureau Spectacular – named Emerging Architect of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2018 – and structured, multi-layered plans in the Standard Architecture / Design Studio uses.

“I’ve never seen so many inspiring projects proudly displayed in models and photographs,” Goodwin told Dezeen.

Four of the work areas made it into the top 10 of the photographer of all series. These included Marmol Radziner’s studio with exposed wooden trusses and large windows, Morphosis’ bright white room, and Edward Ogosta Architecture’s house in a converted old bread factory.

Goodwin also praised the views offered by CO Architects’ building, built in the mid-20th century as the Carnation Company’s headquarters and restaurant.

“Marmol Radziner, Morphosis, and Eric Owen Moss Architects made my top 10 list of favorite studios, and CO has some of the best views I’ve seen,” he said.

In addition to the exhibition of maquettes, a highlight for Goodwin were the architectural images on display, including works by the prolific American photographer Julius Shulman from the 20th century.

“It was worth seeing such an appreciation for architectural photography in almost every room I visited,” he added. “The architects at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney in particular stood out for having an almost gallery-like studio filled with amazing photographs, including two signed prints by none other than Julius Shulman.”

While enjoying his studio visits, Goodwin said his trip to Guelph was particularly strenuous compared to the others due to the city’s notorious traffic problems.

“It’s a boring truism – I don’t know anything new to anyone – but it was amazing to see how it could really take an hour and a half to travel 15 miles from Santa Monica to downtown LA in the middle of the day, regardless of rush hour,” said he.

“And that comes after working in Dubai, Beijing and Shanghai, which are also not exactly free of traffic problems,” added Goodwin. “LA is proof that cars alone offer neither freedom nor comfort.”
