A Guelph music teacher could soon have her very own Juno statuette, after being nominated for an award that honours music teachers for their contributions to music education.
Kelly Stronach, a teacher at Mitchell Woods Public School on Willow Road, is one of five people from across Canada in the running for the 2022 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award.
“Thanks to their commitment, expertise, passion, and resilience, young people all across the country experience the power of music and its many benefits,” MusiCounts president Kristy Fletcher said in a news release.
The organization is a music education charity associated with the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the JUNO Awards. It aims to “make music education inclusive, sustainable, and accessible for youth across Canada by providing musical instruments, equipment, and resources,” says the MusiCounts website.
The award, presented by the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation, will be announced live on the Juno Awards broadcast May 15.
“This year’s nominees are a remarkable group of teachers who represent the excellence and dedication of music educators nationwide,” Fletcher said.
The award winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize, “a significant contribution toward their school music program,” a news release said. The winner will also walk away with a Juno statuette.
