Fledgling Guelph science charity secures sponsorship

A charitable organization formed with hopes of building a science centre in Guelph has secured its first major donor.

Sutherland Insurance has committed $25,000 to Royal City Science, with $5,000 to be donated annually for the next five years.

“This $25,000 donation is the first major donation to come in from our incredible community,” Royal City Science co-founder and University of Guelph lecturer Orbax said in an email to the Mercury Tribune.

“Sutherland has shown a commitment to fostering natural curiosity and supporting accessible public science programming in Guelph,” he said.

Royal City Science formed during the pandemic with the ultimate vision of creating a bricks-and-mortar centre dedicated to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Its early days involved virtual events designed to engage the public in STEM activities.

The organization achieved charitable status in the spring of 2022.

“Sutherland Insurance is thrilled to be a foundation sponsor of the Royal City Science project,” marketing manager Suzanne Sutherland said in the email. “This highly anticipated project will bring the joy of scientific exploration and discovery to our youth now through school visits and exhibits throughout the city and will soon grow to be a Guelph Science Centre for all to enjoy.”
